Mobile Eye Screening Unit

In 1996, the Foundation put a Mobile Eye Screening Unit (MESU)

in service. This unique vehicle is operated by the Foundation and the Lions of District 2-A2 to provide eye screening services to the communities of South Texas. The custom equipped 40 foot mobile platform also contains specially equipped research work stations that allow UTHSC researchers to take their various programs to the field where research data can be gathered and transmitted to the University for real time evaluation by the professional staff. The “MESU” also provides a platform for various educational and information dispensing programs that have been designed with and supported by the University.

MESU_unitA partnership with The Friends of the Congressional Glaucoma Caucus Foundation was formed to increase the utilization of the MESU. From 2007 until 2012, the joint Lions – FCGCF program employed a unique screening protocol aimed at the identification of individuals with glaucoma or with vision markers suggesting that they may develop glaucoma. Unlike screening events sponsored by Lions Clubs that are administered by Lions volunteers, the FCGCF screenings employed a trained staff

The basic Mission of the MESU has remained intact and vision screenings sponsored by Lions Clubs in District 2-A2 are still the primary focus of the Program. This project was originally funded by the Lions Clubs of District 2-A2, Lions Clubs International Foundation, and the HEB Corporation.

Since its inception, the Lions Mobile Eye Screening Unit has provided free vision screenings to over 66,000 people throughout Central and South Texas.
